Amelia's mom blames her abolitionist husband for his or her dwelling stipulations, which she claims are taking a toll on her future health. Amelia observes her mother's hate and her father's admiration for Abraham Lincoln.

But slavery is the deeper factor setting apart the 2 aspects. because the Civil conflict rages on, Amelia slowly learns that she can't cease the scuffling with, yet by means of retaining watch within the lighthouse every day, lights the lamps, cleansing the glass, and rescuing sufferers of Atlantic storms, she will be able to nonetheless make a distinction.
