“My new curiosity is burglary. When a few girls get divorced they return to varsity, i presumed. a few do volunteer paintings on the sanatorium, or ... have affairs with irrelevant men."

(That's early within the e-book. in a while, she works the guy in too.)

"Wickedly delicious... What makes (Thompson's) ebook so relatively excellent is how it accomplishes the detective novel's covert venture of city research and social criticism." -San Francisco Examiner

"(Thompson) is aware how one can create that feel of position that's so vital to any novel, yet really to crime fiction; her characters are plausible males and women in a true world..." --P.D. James

First comes divorce, then comes murder…

…or a minimum of candy ideas of homicide. Maggie Longstreet has lots of them after slimy, bold Richard trades her in for a newer version. She’s so depressed she will be able to slightly get away from bed while Larry Hawkins, a possible not-at-all depressed acquaintance, commits suicide abruptly. unexpectedly Maggie is going on excessive alert, remembering anything her evil ex stated approximately Larry—something hugely suspicious.

And from there, it really is only a brief segué to a bracing new development:

“When a few girls get divorced they return to college, i assumed. a few do volunteer paintings on the clinic, or sign up for communes and discover ways to beginning calves. a few have affairs with beside the point males. My new curiosity is housebreaking. Maggie Longstreet, former spouse and mom, previous president of the Museum Guild, now beginning a profession as a second-story woman.”

Fortunately, Maggie isn’t on my own in her adventure—a very beautiful, a lot more youthful guy proves much more enjoyable than Richard ever used to be. in reality, the true satisfaction of this witty, sly secret is seeing Maggie come alive back after a suffocating marriage. Set in the’70s, it has slightly that Mad males consider of girls close to anything giant. And thoroughly unforeseen.

You recognize Maggie’s going to be ok whilst she says: “I’d quite have had a type of lovable little weapons with a mother-of-pearl deal with, yet this (diamond pin) must do. I hid it in my hand. no less than now i used to be armed—or pinned.”
