George Duncan is an American residing and dealing in London.  At forty-eight, he owns a details store, is divorced, and lonelier than he realizes.  all the ladies with whom he has relationships finally depart him for being too nice.  yet one evening he's woken by way of an outstanding sound—a superb keening, that is coming from someplace in his garden.  while he investigates he unearths a superb white crane, a chicken taller than even himself.  it's been shot throughout the wing with an arrow.  Moved greater than he can say, George struggles to take out the arrow from the bird's wing, saving its lifestyles prior to it flies away into the evening sky.

The subsequent morning, a shaken George attempts to move approximately his way of life, chickening out to the again of his shop and making cuttings from discarded books—a risk free, own hobby—when in the course of the entrance door of the store a lady walks in.  Her identify is Kumiko, and he or she asks George to aid her together with her personal artwork.  George is dumbstruck through her attractiveness and her enigmatic nature, and starts to fall desperately in love with her.   She turns out to carry the aptitude to alter his complete existence, if he may in simple terms get her to bare the key of who she is and why she has introduced her paintings to him.
