After the Communist victory, Wang Qiyao keeps to bask in the decadent pleasures of the Shanghai bourgeoisie, secretly taking part in mahjong through the antirightist crusade and changing fans at the eve of the Cultural Revolution. She reemerges within the Nineteen Eighties as a purveyor of "old Shanghai," basically to develop into embroiled in a tragedy that echoes the Hollywood noirs of her youth.
